Thousands of years after the fall of humankind as we know it, the Four Lands are in grave danger. The Ellcrys, an ancient tree that protects the world from demons, is dying. Elven princess Amberle runs the Gauntlet, a race to choose the seven servants of the sacred tree, but when she touches it she has a terrifying vision.

Having seen a vision of the end of the world, Amberle leaves her grandfather's palace to seek advice from Eventine's sister Pyria at Wing Hove. After the Changeling slaughters the other Chosen tree servants, Wil and Allanon realise that Amberle is the sole key to saving the Four Lands, but can they find her before the Dagda Mor's demons?

On their way back to Arborlon, Allanon falls ill from a wound and Amberle's life is in danger when she and Wil and Amberle are captured by Eretria and the Rovers. They also encounter a mysterious elf kept chained up inside his family's barn.
